The Edge: Ariise, Building Greener and Better.

Novedge:  Tell us a little bit about yourselves and what you do.

Ryan Kolar: ARIISE is a sustainable firm that designs, builds, and consults on building projects throughout the country.Ariise2Novedge: You claim Ariise is changing the way we build. How?

Ryan Kolar: We don’t seek the highest margins like most developers, and we aren’t trying to get on magazine covers. We are seeking the most intuitive way to build. We audit where our products come from, how they get to our sites, how they are assembled, and exactly how we can improve any and all parts of that process to make it more sustainable. Simply speaking, we just build buildings faster, better, and greener than anyone else. LEED is a joke, so are other third party sustainable audits. We are proving it, and soon we will educate the industry exactly how we can.

Novedge: What is a recent project that you worked on?

Ryan Kolar: We have very exciting things on the boards, but in all truth, I can’t really talk about it except to say that the American suburb will never be the same again. We’re going to replace every major mass-market building with a greener building that looks better, operates more efficiently, and can be built in half the time. Every developer who doesn’t buy our prototypes is going to go out of business. Novedge: What is the Ariise Sustainability Fund?

Ryan Kolar: The Fund is a way for people who want to help save the world to invest into our internal projects, and make a sizable return while making an environmental impact.

Novedge: What are some of the projects that gave you the best returns?

Ryan Kolar: All of our projects produce returns. Whether the return is heaviest in finance, research, or awareness varies project to project.

Novedge: Innovation is a big part of your practice, how do you drive innovation and what are the different areas of your research?

Ryan Kolar: We strive to create an environment where each employee, vendor, and subcontractor is listened to and incorporated into the betterment of our products. AriiseNovedge: What software do you use?

Ryan Kolar: We are cad-based, and use Rhino, V-Ray, Sketch-up, and the CS programs for different parts of our design, development and implementation process. BIM is a joke, yet people keep talking about it. Virtual Reality seems to be the next trending movement, but again, the tech is far behind what people are promising. Give me a team that can measure properly, add and subtract, and I’ll build you anything you can dream up.

Novedge: How did you find out about Novedge?

Ryan Kolar: The ARIISE way, through research of who the best vendors are for each system.

Novedge: What kind of change do you hope to see in Architecture in the next 20-30 years?

Ryan Kolar: Transparency. Developers lie, Contractors lie, Suppliers lie. Architects are too self-consumed. We can build faster, better and cheaper because we know how to do everything and push our team to ignore greed and politics and produce better results.

Novedge: Is Chicago the hottest city for Architecture right now?

Ryan Kolar: Absolutely not. There are a lot of skyscrapers and mid-rises under construction, which is fun to see the big boys build big toys. But, in all truth, even the Architecture rock stars are held up by Chicago’s red tape, permit process, zoning board, and inspection schedules. It’s a joke and it’s hurting the industry. Japan, China, Dubai get it. They realize the process is a dinosaur and augment innovations in the process. The United States is built on PC policies, lawyers and liability insurance. Everyone is so terrified of a lawsuit, that it takes us much longer to build anything of value. Look at the Freedom Tower, designed by politics. What a missed opportunity that turned out to be.
